Lapindo mud water to be dumped in Java Sea
Foto Surabaya (ANTARA News) - PT Lapindo Brantas Inc. is
racing to finish the installation of a 20-kilometer long
pipe network to flow mudwater so far inundating villages in
Porong, East Java, to the Java Sea.
"The pipe network starts from the pond (that collects the
mudwater) near the Porong river and goes to the Java Sea in
Sidoarjo," Budi Santoso, the company`s external relations
and security manager, told ANTARA News here on Saturday.
The company began installing the pipe network after the
office of the minister of environment and the governor of
East Java issued permits for the dumping of treated mudwater
to the sea.
Mudwater continued flowing out of Lapindo Brantas`s drilling
operations and inundating villages nearby.
The process of treatment of the mud water and the dumping of
the water resulting from the treatment will be jointly
carried out by teams from the office of the minister of
environment, the Lapindo, the Surabaya Institute of
Technology and the Bandung Institute of Technology.
Budi Santoso meanwhile said that construction of dykes to
prevent mudflows from inundating wider areas still
continued.
Regarding plans to relocate people from seven villages that
would be used as a dam he said that the decision for it was
in the hands of the government.
"In principles we do want any villager to fall victim in
connection with the efforts and therefore a relocation
program is made. However the final decision about is in the
hands of the government and the local people," he said. (*)
